Your goal is our goal — helping our students succeed

Dear ASU Parents,

So many of you have participated in one way or another with the Parents Association, and I thank all of you for your engagement. When we build a network of dedicated parents, we establish a foundation to support student success at ASU. With your help, we foster growth and innovation at ASU and create opportunities for students to excel in their education.

During this time of year, we excitedly welcome incoming Sun Devil families at our new student orientations and in a few short weeks we will congratulate parents of seniors at graduation. The Parents Association is a resource for Sun Devil families throughout the college experience, providing support for student success initiatives and a way for parents to stay involved with and connected to ASU.

As graduation approaches, I want to congratulate the students who are venturing into the next exciting stage in their lives. Many students and parents remain actively involved in our Sun Devil family following commencement. The ASU Alumni Association is a great way for graduates to find valuable resources through ASU as well as connect with fellow alumni. Our Parents of Alums (PLUMS) can stay connected to their student's alma mater through ongoing activities and support.

Go Sun Devil families!

2012 Professor of the Year
Out-of-state student finds family away from home through the Parents Association scholarship

The Parents Association recognized 29 Arizona State University professors for teaching and research excellence at the Faculty Excellence Awards on April 17. Chemistry and biochemistry professor Ian Gould was honored as the 2012 Professor of the Year.

As one of the "most valuable scholars" in the nation, Dillon Card had the opportunity to go anywhere, but he chose Arizona State University. With the help of the Parents Association, Dillon found tuition relief as well as a family away from home.

Student earns prestigious Stegner creative writing fellowship     Entrepreneurship continues to grow
at ASU

ASU Career Services has seen a 27-percent increase over last year in the number of positions posted online through their Sun Devil CareerLink jobs database. More than 84 percent of students who graduated in 2011 reported having received or accepted an offer by 90 days past graduation and studies show recent ASU graduates earn $1,500 more in annual income than the national average.     Hugh Martin, who will graduate from ASU's Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing this spring, has received a prestigious Wallace Stegner Fellowship from Stanford University. Stanford's creative writing program, considered one of the most competitive in the country, awards only 10 fellowships each year (five in poetry, five in fiction) from an international pool of more than 1,700 applicants.     On the heels of a year full of big wins and national accolades, the Edson Student Entrepreneur Initiative also recorded a 35 percent increase in applications. The program has become one of the largest privately funded business plan competitions at a U.S. university. "Our student entrepreneurs are making a splash in the global scene," says Gordon McConnell, executive director of ASU's Venture Catalyst.
